Losing A Loved One

Can you hear it?
The unsung melody of my heart
Crying out despite my doubt that
Language can carry the weight of grief.
Relief doesn’t always come as I pen
The Melody into words,
But still I’m asking if you’ve heard
The song of loss bleeding from my veins,
Echoing in every silent scream
Seemingly falling on deaf ears
Though I know tears are shared among the human experience
When times are tense or emotions rent.
We’re turned inside out as vision is lent
To those around us to see what’s inside
The body we wear as our masks tear and we can
No longer pretend we’re fine because we’re not.
We’re not fine. But we’re okay with that.
We grieve; we cry; we hurt, but only because we love
And I won’t cover my pain I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Each day brings us closer to your last
And with your death fast approaching I remember the past
Full of fond memories causing me to smile
Even though it is such a short while
Until the time to make new memories is gone.
It is almost time for us to part, but I take heart
Knowing I’ll see you again when I arrive in heaven.
Until then: I love you, I will miss you, and I thank you
For all our good times because those memories are now mine
To hold onto when I can’t hold onto you.
